Preah Vihear: Shells Can Shatter Stone, But They Cannot Erase History

This video shows the attack on the area of the Temple of Preah Vihear during the Thai military’s armed aggression in December 2025, which left severe damage to Preah Vihear—a World Heritage property that has stood through centuries of history.

Shells striking a temple do not merely break pieces of stone. They destroy architecture, history, cultural identity, and heritage that humanity shares a collective responsibility to protect.

The Temple of Preah Vihear is not a place that can simply be subjected to destructive fire without regard for the consequences. Every shattered structure, every impact crater, and every damaged part of the temple represents a wound inflicted upon irreplaceable cultural heritage that can never be restored exactly to its original state.

What makes these images even more painful is the sound and apparent celebratory behaviour of the Thai soldiers involved in the attack, showing little regard as this precious World Heritage property came under fire.

The temple may be damaged, but history cannot be shelled into oblivion. Stone may be shattered, but the evidence of destruction will remain a witness to history.

The destruction of the Temple of Preah Vihear is not merely the destruction of Cambodia’s heritage. It is damage inflicted upon the shared heritage of humanity. Preah Vihear is a World Heritage property. Heritage deserves protection—not artillery fire.

The report of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre–ICOMOS Joint Advisory Mission recorded data provided by the National Authority for Preah Vihear showing that the attacks in July 2025 caused damage at 142 locations across the temple complex, while the attacks in December caused damage at an additional 420 locations. This means that across the two episodes of armed aggression by the Thai military, damage was recorded at a total of 562 locations at the Temple of Preah Vihear.

This evidence is further reinforced by a technical survey conducted by the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC). CMAC identified a total of 501 impact craters caused by aerial bombs, artillery fire, and drones. Of these, 78 craters were recorded from the July clashes and 423 craters from the armed aggression in December 2025.

562 recorded locations of damage. 501 impact craters. A World Heritage property scarred by war.

These are not merely numbers. They represent physical scars left upon a monument of outstanding value to humanity.

Shells can shatter stone. They can scar a temple. But they cannot erase history—and they cannot erase what happened at Preah Vihear.
